My Pageant Experience - Miss India Worldwide NZ
No matter how close or distant someone is from me, hands down the most asked question I've ever received from anyone over the last few months is "congratulations, how was Miss India?" And in such short meet ups I really can't say much more than "it was great".
There's a lot of ways for me to approach this question, so much has happened. So I thought I'd explain everything from A to Z about my pageant experience here on the blog.
If you just wanna see the pictures then scroll all the way to the bottom or check my Facebook profile here.
How it all started?
It all started July 2017, when one night while scrolling through Facebook I came across Miss India NZ (not the pageant I ended up doing). Just the idea of being part of a pageant is like a little childhood fantasy. Now I thought this would be time consuming, expensive and something really hard to convince my parents to support me about but I literally played it YOLO and sent the organisation a message about my interest in seeing what it's about. While on their page, in the suggestions I came across Miss India Worldwide NZ (the pageant I actually did) and I sent them along a message too. The organisation got back to me the same night, sounded friendly and had invited me to their interview panel which was held the next day.
Now I was in a bit of panic that I had sealed a deal for a pageant interview in the midst of the night and my parents knew nothing about it but I I told them everything in the morning (mum first) and after one roller-coaster of a conversation my half convinced parents let me go with mum to my interview the very same day.
The interview was one on one and really insight about everything the pageant is like. My mum was convinced and so was I. The paperwork were all explained and after my signatures I was confirmed I was a finalist in Miss India Worldwide NZ. On a side note, Miss India NZ did get back to me but by then I was already a finalist for Miss India Worldwide NZ and so I didn't think much more of the other pageant.
What is Miss India Worldwide?
Miss India Worldwide is a pageant on an international platform (Miss India NZ is not international). It is run in 40 countries worldwide from where the winners get a free trip to the location of the year (New York 2016, New Jersey 2017) where they stay and tour leading to a final competition where all 40 countries compete against each other. What was I crowned for?
I was crowned 2nd Runner Up for the event (youngest contestant to ever be crowned) and also won best evening gown and most beautiful smile. (You get a sash, crown and certificates).
What do you actually have to do?
The pageant consists of 4 rounds:
Beach Wear (no inappropriate clothing allowed, must respect the Indian ethics behind the competition)
Talent Round - Video
Evening Wear + Question Answer Round - Video
What happens behind the scenes?
Behind the scenes there are weekly training sessions where you are taught by professionals how to walk the runway, how to pose, turn and where to be on the stage at what time. Behind the scenes you get to meet the other contestants personally and the whole pageant environment was so much more encouraging than competitive. It was just such a welcoming and friendly space.
What I learnt from this experience?
Life is too short to live for other people, just do what you believe will make you proud and prove them wrong. Like when this all started out and the hesitant approach my parents had to this event compared to my whole whole whole family screaming my name from the stands just was the biggest feeling of satisfaction and support I've ever felt with my family and realizing it all started off as I really want to do this in my life and not overthink how others were going to react to it.
I also learnt so much about myself, like I ain't no shy queen. I lost every insecurity I ever had about myself. Having crooked teeth was something I always felt let down my smile, but man did I smile boldly and proudly through all of it and seriously getting most beautiful smile just changed how I perceive myself. I was also always kinda an above average height girl and so I never felt comfortable wearing heels, but oh boy did I learn how to walk in heels and felt bomb.
I'm just really grateful to have had the opportunity to be part of something beautiful and so full of growth and it only inspires me to do more amazing things.
